Jonquiere at a Glance
The City of Jonquiere is one third of the larger metropolis, Ville du Saguenay,
along with Chicoutimi
and La Baie. The
town sprang out of the local industries of logging, pulp and paper. Named after
the governor of New France at the time, Marquis de la Jonquil, the city now
has a population of over 50,000 people. Located near Lac-Saint-Jean,
those in town can go and enjoy the watery wonderland that is the large flat
lake. There is also the Shipshaw
Powerhouse, part of a large hydro-electric power grind that supplies
the area with juice. There are weekday tour available. Club
Saguenay-Arvida is a prime spot for golfers looking to hit the links
while in Jonquiere. In the snowy month, the town plays host to Jonquiere
en Neige, from January 25 to February 4. The 10-day winter festival
celebrates with live displays from over 1000 sculptors, activities and entertainment.
